  • Why should we pray?
    • Prayer is expected
      • Jesus expects us to Pray
        • Matthew 6:5-9 says, Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.† 6 But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.†† 7 When you pray, don’t babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words.† 8 Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him. 9 “Therefore, you should pray like this:
      • God’s Word makes it clear
        • Colossians 4:2 says, devote yourselves to prayer.
        • 1 Thessalonians says, pray continually
    • Prayer with the church is a mark of New Testament Christianity.
      • Acts 2:42 says And they continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in prayers.
    • Prayer with the church brings the power of united prayer.
      • Matthew 18:19-20 says, Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by my father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of them.
      • United prayer is linked with the effectiveness of the Gospel and the church.
        • Acts 4:24 says, So when they heard the threats against them, they raised their voice to God with one accord.
    • Prayer is learned
      • By praying
        • John 16:13 says But when he, the spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.
      • By meditating on Scripture.
        • Incline my heart to you, not to prideful gain or any false motive. (Psalm 119:36)
        • Open my eyes to behold wonderful things in your Word. (Psalm 119:18)
        • Unite my heart to fear your name. (Psalm 86:11)
        • Satisfy me with your steadfast love. (Psalm 90:14)
      • By Praying with others
        • Luke 11:1 says Lord, teach us to pray.

        • Proverbs 13:20 says He who walks with the wise grows wise.

    • Prayer is answered
      • Matthew 7:7-8 says, Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
  • What Changes Thursday?
    Since prayer is expected, will you pray?
    Since prayer is learned, will you learn to pray?
    Since prayer is answered, will you persistently pray?
    Is corporate prayer important to you?
    Will you become an active part of the prayer life of your church?
